Your first marriage counseling session in Atlanta should feel clear, respectful, and focused on what matters most to both of you.
What to Expect in Your First Marriage Counseling Session
If you are comparing Atlanta marriage counseling options, it helps to know what the first visit actually looks like. At the Woodsfellow Institute for Couples Therapy, the work is built for two people in the room together, clear goals, and direct feedback you can use the same week at home.
This page walks you through the opening steps. For the full model of ongoing counseling, read our main marriage counseling page, then return here when you want a visit-by-visit picture.

Before you arrive
Most couples start with a short phone call so you can ask practical questions without pressure. You can request a free phone consultation to learn how scheduling works, what paperwork looks like, and how often sessions are recommended for your situation.
Bring a calendar, insurance or payment questions, and any forms you already completed. If you are unsure what to share first, write down three examples of conflict that felt typical, not only the worst fight. That gives your therapist a fair sample of the pattern you want to change.
What happens in the first couples session
The first meeting is with both of you together. The focus is on your shared story: what hurts, what you have already tried, and what each of you wants to be different in the next few months. You will be asked how you talk when stress is high, how you repair after tension, and what safety means for each of you in conversation.
You should expect a calm structure, not a free-for-all debate. The therapist will slow the conversation when it speeds up, name the cycle you are stuck in, and keep the room balanced so both voices get air time. You will also hear how confidentiality works, how billing is handled, and how to reach the office between visits.
What comes after the first session
Our practice uses a careful early sequence so recommendations fit you rather than a generic script. That means there is a defined plan for early assessment, including one individual meeting for each partner and a later feedback session together. Those steps are described in more detail on the marriage counseling service page, where you can also review common topics like communication, trust after betrayal, and high conflict cycles.
When you are ready to book, use our appointment request form or call (404) 325-3401. You can also read more about Dr. David Woodsfellow and Deborah Woodsfellow, PA, MPH before you choose a time.

"We are loving each other like never before. I feel like I'm finally figuring out what it means to be a husband, and she feels the same about her role as a wife. Thank you for challenging me."
